Vintage Peterborough Wooden Skis.
Made of maple wood, with metal bindings, these skis are pretty interesting as they have several identifying marks as follows:
- degraded but discernible "Peterborough, Made in Canada" logo on one ski tip
- "Super Grade" carved into the tips of the ski bases
- "2039, Maple, 5 FT" carved into the skis just above the bindings
Peterborough skis and toboggans were made in a division of Peterborough Canoe Company from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. October 5, 1892 work began on a new factory at the corner of Water and King Streets in Peterborough, Ontario. It opened on February 15, 1893 under the name of the Peterborough Canoe Company, and employed 50 skilled workers.
Wooden ski production continued until the 1950s, when fiberglass and metal skis infiltrated the market. Peterborough struggled through the transition and eventually filed for bankrupcy in 1962.
These skis are in good condition and look good in real life! The brand is still visible which is a key factor when buying original vintage skis instead of reproductions.
