1955 Children's book "White Holiday" by Viola Bayley was the book my sister and I fought over as kids...we both loved it and clearly wanted ownership of it long term (but possession is 9/10 of the law and Mum's copy is now in MY bookshelf!).
"A fortnight's holiday in Switzerland! When Mrs. Vandermeyer's invitation arrived. Rosamund and Will Burnaby could hardly believe their good future. Of course there was Mrs. Vandermeyer's objectionable son Lewis to contend with, but both Rosamund and Fifteen-year-old Will considered this a minor flaw in their happiness.
The Grand Hotel at Reinigen was a wonderful place, but when the Burnaby's became friendly with the celebrated young ski-er, Otto von Vierling, and learnt his story, danger and mystery began to cast a shadow over their enjoyment.
How Rosamund, Will and Lewis helped to protect Otto from is unknown enemy is told in this exciting story, see in a picturesque landscape of snow and ice-capped mountains.
Viola Bayley's style contains a fresh charm which makes her very readable, and her happy gift for characterisation fills her book with people who, from attractive Rosamund to eccentric Miss Dover at the hotel are warm and individual."
