The 1930s have been dubbed the Golden Age of poster design in Australia. This was partly due to the efforts of the Victorian Railways and the Australian National Travel Association to promote tourism and outdoor recreation by commissioning posters from the best commercial artists of the day.
Nestled in the Victorian highlands, gazing out from among the bush and boasting spectacular views, the Mount Buffalo Chalet started as a playground for budding adventurers over 110 years ago.
Perched 1000 m above the surrounding valley, among land described by geologist E.T. Dunn as “the garden of the gods”, the chalet was un by Victorian Railways and was one of the most popular destinations in the Mount Buffalo National Park for tourists and snow enthusiasts.
The modern reproductions were done by Melbourne illustrator Fay Plamka in 1992, a founding member of Illustrators Australia.Fay was commissioned by the National Victorian Railways to reproduce these beautiful posters
They were sold as prints, lithographs and signed limited edition prints throughout Australia and the World.
Organisations like the National Parks and the Victorian Railways commissioned these posters to encourage visitation to properties they ran. These posters have become iconic images of Australia a leisure over time.
