The movie plot follows the true story of Jill Kinmont (played by Marilyn Hassett), an 18-year-old ski-racing champion. A year prior to the 1956 Winter Olympics, she suffers a horrific, near-fatal crash during a race that leaves her paralyzed from the shoulders down. The film charts her grueling physical and emotional journey as she fights to regain her independence and find purpose as a teacher, aided by her family and her daredevil skier fiancé, Dick Buek (Beau Bridges).
While released as The Other Side of the Mountain in the United States, it was distributed under the title A Window to the Sky across the United Kingdom, Australia, and other international markets.
The film's theme song, "Richard's Window" (performed by Olivia Newton-John), was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
