Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in the late 19th century in what we now call the USA. His first few years were disastrous with a few unsuccessful starts including his entire operation and inventory destroyed in early October 1871 during the Great Chicago Fire. He was a visionary seeing the potential to capture the rural market with his mail order catalog. While his business didn't actually manufacture wooden skis he capitalised on his thriving brand by placing his logo and innovative slogan "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back". It is believed that Montgomery Ward first started selling skis manufactured by Theodore A. Johnsen Co. (Tayco) in the winter of 1906-1907.
